European Court of General Jurisdiction satisfied lawsuit of the Belarusian tire manufacturer Belshina OJSC and excluded it from the sanctions list. Sanctions on Belshina were imposed in 2021 as part of the fifth EU sanctions package against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Then the European Union considered the company one of the largest “sources of income for the Lukashenko regime.”

In the spring of 2022, Belshina appealed to the EU Court of Justice with a demand to lift the sanctions. The company argued its position by the fact that, although it is the largest tire manufacturer in Belarus, it could not sponsor the “Lukashenko regime”, since at the time of the introduction of sanctions its business had already been unprofitable for several years.

The EU Court of Justice ruled that the Council of the European Union failed to prove that the Belarusian government actually benefits from the company’s income. The court also excluded Belshina from the sanctions list introduced due to Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
