Belgian Prime Minister calls on EU to abandon Russian nuclear fuel

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said that EU countries need to abandon Russian nuclear fuel as soon as possible. According to him, in an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the EU is replacing one dependence with another.
“Changing supply chains, especially in the nuclear sector, is difficult, but we need to do it as quickly as possible. We need to switch off from Russian nuclear fuel, but you need to make sure we can still produce electricity with zero emissions,” Mr De Croo told the newspaper Financial Times.
In 2022, the European Union returned to the strategy of increasing nuclear fuel reserves for the first time in eight years. Owners of Soviet-type reactors, fearing sanctions on supplies from Russia, began stocking up on fuel.
At the UN global climate conference COP28 in December 2023, hundreds of companies from 25 countries pledged to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050 to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
