Barbie director Greta Gerwig to head Cannes Film Festival jury

The chairman of the jury of the 77th Cannes Film Festival will be the director of the film “Barbie” Greta Gerwig. The festival will take place in May 2024.
Ms. Gerwig, 40, will become the first female American director to head the jury, AFP reports. The Cannes Film Festival has not had such a young chairman since 1966, when the jury was headed by 31-year-old Sophia Loren. The last time a woman served as jury president was in 2018, when the post was held by actress Cate Blanchett.
The film “Barbie” became the highest-grossing film of 2023, grossing more than $1.4 billion at the box office. Ms. Gerwig also previously directed the films “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019). He is working on a film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. She starred in more than 20 films.
