“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” do not correspond to the spiritual values of Russia – Kommersant

The Ministry of Culture of Russia opposed the distribution of the films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in Russia for parallel imports due to the discrepancy between these films and the “traditional spiritual and moral values” of the country. Vladislav Davankov, Vice Speaker of the State Duma from the New People party, addressed the department with a request to consider the issue of allowing film rentals.
The politician suggested that the Ministry of Culture conduct an experiment on compulsory licensing of films from unfriendly countries, including so that Russian viewers could watch Barbie and Oppenheimer cinemas. Copies of the film, in his opinion, can be brought to Russia through parallel imports. However, the ministry did not agree with the proposal of the parliamentarian.
“We believe that the films you proposed for viewing by the citizens of our country: “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” do not meet the goals and objectives set by the Head of State to preserve and strengthen traditional Russian spiritual and moral values,” Acting Minister of Culture Andrey said in a response. Malyshev at the request of Mr. Davankov (Kommersant has it). The department also pointed out that Russian films are now being successfully shown in the Russian box office, which are fully consistent with spiritual and moral values. As an example, the film “Witness” about the military operation in Ukraine, as well as the film “Palma-2” about the friendship of a boy and a dog are given.
Andrey Malyshev also emphasized that “representatives of the film industry note the positive aspect of the reduction in the number of films from Hollywood film studios at the box office.” According to the Ministry of Culture, the absence of foreign films stimulates the development of domestic cinematography.
Barbie movie rights belong American Warner Bros., Oppenheimer – Universal Pictures. Both companies left Russia in 2022 due to the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine.
Both films came out released worldwide on the same day, July 20. In three weeks, Barbie grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Oppenheimer grossed $552 million over the same period. Both films, although not released in Russia, were published on torrents, though in “screen” quality. As Kommersant wrote, during the peak period, the number of downloads and distributions of the Barbie film reached 8,000, while that of Oppenheimer reached 4,000.
