Bananas and salt have risen the most in two years - Kommersant

Over the past two years, compared to other products in the consumer basket of Russians, bananas and salt have added the most significant in price, analysts of the Kontur.Market system calculated. Turkey and tea fell the most during this period.

As part of a study reviewed by RIA Novosti, experts studied the sales of goods that are included in the consumer basket of Russians. They compared prices and the number of sales at the end of July 2023 with the same period in 2022 (when sanctions were already imposed on the Russian Federation) and 2021 (when the country’s economy recovered significantly after the pandemic).

According to Kontur.Market, the price of bananas at the end of July 2023 compared to July 2021 increased by 1.7 times (+ 71%), salt became more expensive by 64%, and spices – by 54%. In the fruit and vegetable category, the price of onions (+33%) and lemons (+22%) increased significantly. Among dairy products, kefir (+31%), sour cream (+24%) and cottage cheese (+22%) went up in price. Experts also compared prices for alcoholic products. Beer and cognac have become more expensive by 27% and 20% respectively in two years. Vodka and wine added 13% and 9% respectively.

At the same time, analysts note that socially important products that are important for the population have slightly increased in price over the past two years. Thus, pasta and eggs went up by 11%, potatoes – by 5%, pork – by 3%, flour – by 2%. The price of vegetable oil in July 2023 was the same as in July 2021.

At the same time, bread and sugar became more expensive immediately by 19% and 20%, respectively, cereals (excluding buckwheat) – by 18%. Similar changes occurred in the cost of chicken and fish. In two years, confectionery products have become more expensive by 17%, milk – by 14%.

The biggest decline in two years was recorded in the price of tea and turkey – they fell by 35% and 32%, respectively. The price of carrots also fell significantly (-29%). Buckwheat and tangerines are on the same list: they fell in price by 12% and 5%, respectively.

According to Rosstat, inflation in Russia from 8 to 14 August accelerated to 0.10% from 0.01%. Prices for fruit and vegetable products in the country decreased by 2.4% over the week. According to the Ministry of Economy, annual inflation in Russia accelerated from 4.43% a week earlier to 4.66% from 8 to 14 August.
