The ballet “Nureyev” by Kirill Serebrennikov was removed from the repertoire of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater, said “Interfax” General Director of the theater Vladimir Urin. The production was abandoned after the passage of the LGBT propaganda law.
“The performance “Nureyev” was removed from the repertoire in connection with the signed law, where issues related to the promotion of non-traditional values were absolutely unequivocally discussed … Naturally, as soon as the law was signed, the theater decided to remove this performance from the theater’s repertoire,” said Urin Mr.
The law banning LGBT propaganda in Russia was signed by President Vladimir Putin on December 5, 2022. The law established fines: for individuals – up to 800 thousand rubles, for officials – up to 800 thousand rubles, for legal entities – up to 10 million rubles.
The premiere of the ballet “Nureyev”, dedicated to the artist Rudolf Nureyev, took place on December 17, 2017. In the last months before the premiere, the performance was prepared without the participation of the director Kirill Serebrennikov. The director was under house arrest during an embezzlement investigation.
