The name “A Hero of Our Time” appeared on the poster of the Bolshoi Theater – a ballet staged by director Kirill Serebrennikov back in 2015 to the music of Ilya Demutsky in the choreography of Yuri Posokhov and then caused conflicting assessments of critics and the public. True, the name of the director is not on the poster. The loud departure of Serebrennikov from Russia and his subsequent statements were followed by the removal of the play from the repertoire. The practice of including in the repertoire of Russian state theaters the performances of directors and playwrights who condemned the SVO and left Russia is not unique. In the same Bolshoi Theater, the play The Seagull, staged by director Alexander Molochnikov, is firmly fixed in the playbill. He also left for distant countries, actively posting fakes about the special operation on social networks, which did not prevent the Bolshoi Theater from declaring him in the summer of 2022 as the director of Sergei Rachmaninov’s opera Francesca da Rimini.
And only the indignation of the public, which considered the combination of “Sasha” (that’s what the director calls himself) with the patriot Rakhmaninov, who, during the Great Patriotic War, while in exile, transferred funds from his concerts to the Red Army, to be blasphemy, forced the leadership of BT to refuse the services of a director . But this did not affect the “Seagull” in any way.
The performance is on, although Molochnikov’s name shamefacedly disappeared from the poster and from the announcement. All the laurels will now go to the same Yuri Posokhov. But about the copyright – the question. Even if the name of the director is not indicated on the poster, his copyright agreement is valid. Otherwise, the theater violates copyright. So the Bolshoi Theater is in a difficult situation: if it doesn’t pay, it breaks the law;
I must say that the Bolshoi Theater is not alone in this situation. In the theater “Satyricon” there is a performance by Yuri Butusov “R” based on the play by Mikhail Durnenkov. On the official website of the theater, the name of this playwright is missing. However, on numerous resources that sell tickets to the Satyricon, no one is puzzled by the concealment of the authorship of a person who, “congratulating” compatriots on Easter in social networks, wished the “defeat of the Russian army”. And he deciphered the abbreviation “XV” in the most vile way. By the way, in Durnenkov’s profile it is still indicated that he is a teacher at the Higher School of Performing Arts. Maybe he also gets paid there?
