Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will export green energy to Europe

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan agreed to prepare technical specifications and in the future create a joint venture to export green energy to Europe. The agreement was reached at a meeting of the ministers of energy and economy of the three countries held in Baku, reported press service of the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.

Following the meeting, the heads of departments signed a joint communiqué in which they “noted the countries’ potential in the field of renewable energy and their readiness to join the project of exporting electricity from alternative sources to Europe.” The ministers agreed to create a working group to develop terms of reference for cooperation in the field of energy exchange, development of exports of green hydrogen and green ammonia, as well as related infrastructure.

Based on the approved technical specifications, it is planned to announce a tender for the preparation of a preliminary feasibility study of the project. Representatives of the three countries also agreed to explore the prospect of creating a joint venture to implement the project. Its approximate cost and possible timing of introduction are not given.

As part of the initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as well as to further achieve carbon neutrality, the European Union (EU) has reduced the sale of CO2 emission certificates for products imported into the EU, and plans to gradually abolish free emission quotas for its own enterprises. The increasing pace of implementation of the green plan is partly explained by the energy crisis of 2022, which is believed to make an accelerated green energy transition for the EU virtually no alternative.
