The Golden Mask national award, which has been awarded for creative achievements in the field of theatrical art for 30 years, has been radically reformed. Who exactly decided? There is no exact answer. Some assumptions. They do not ask professionals for advice, but boldly cross out key nominations. Why do we need, for example, a playwright or modern dance?
In the depths of the Union of Theater Workers, a draft of a new regulation is being developed, on the basis of which the award will continue to exist. The final decision has not yet been made. In particular, the issue of the formation of expert councils and juries, the subsequent regulation of their activities under the total control of the STD as the founder of the award and the Ministry of Culture is being considered. That is, the experts will be their own, verified, but still there is no complete trust in them, since there is a need to check them and, in which case, to impose a veto. Lists of nominees will also be filtered by the above organizations. From now on, no initiative from below is envisaged.
Some of the nominations will disappear altogether. The “Best Work of a Playwright” took its toll at the recent 29th Golden Mask ceremony. And now an unexpected reform eliminates the nominations “Small Dramatic Performance” (there will be only “Best Performance” for everything about everything), “Experiment” and “Modern Dance”. They, apparently, were considered the most risky theatrical phenomena and thus cut off the youth, who, as a rule, masters the experimental space.
According to the new regulations, the chairman of the Union of Theater Workers, today it is Alexander Kalyagin, can become the president of the festival and the Golden Mask award. That is, the current president, Igor Kostolevsky, will also be sent to the ban?
Everything that we are seeing now has been brewing for a long time. The Golden Mask was attacked from all sides. For what is being done at such a difficult time, when there is no time for holidays. For the removal of the names of directors who have left or are simply objectionable. They were listed as “Director-Director” in accordance with the way it has recently been established in some theaters. But theaters are theaters, and “Mask” is “Mask”. Bold decisions were expected from her. STD annulled the award for “directors-directors”, all “invisibles” and people with names and surnames who found themselves in the same harness with them. Thus, the main figure in the theater at the last Golden Mask was absent as a class. There is a performance, but the director has disappeared into the fog. Brave actresses, contrary to the fears of anxious colleagues, named their favorite directors from the stage, who led them to creative victories. Maryana Spivak named Yuri Butusov. Nina Usatova, receiving an award for creating the image of a Russian woman in Mother’s Heart, delivered an emotional speech in praise of Andrei Moguchy, who then did not renew his contract at the BDT.
Some performances at the latest Golden Mask festivals were canceled altogether, without explaining anything, “for technical reasons.” The audience, not understanding anything, stood at the theatrical entrance and dispersed. Why didn’t the theater come from city N? God knows. And there is no one to ask.
