AvtoVAZ will start producing the crossover Lada X-Cross 5 at the former Nissan plant – a model completely identical to the FAW Bestune T77 was presented to dealers. The original Chinese car is still available from dealers, but Kommersant only found ads for 2022 model year cars. Although the local distributor spoke of deliveries in April, FAW dealers have been waiting for the machines for two months. Prices for Bestune T77 start at almost 2.2 million rubles, how much Lada will cost is unknown.
AvtoVAZ showed dealers a new model Lada X-Cross 5, which will be installed on the conveyor of the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, which was ceded to the domestic concern. Photos from the dealer conference of the brand published in his Telegram channel editor-in-chief of “Behind the wheel” Maxim Kadakov. Externally, the machine is fully consistent with the FAW Bestune T77 model, with the exception of the nameplate. A source close to AvtoVAZ confirmed the authenticity of the car in the photo, but they did not officially comment on it.
At the end of March, the FAW Bestune T77 was spotted on the territory of the AvtoVAZ Research and Development Center in Togliatti. At the same time, Kommersant noticed that a number of Moscow car dealers did not have this model in stock. On March 31, FAV-Eastern Europe LLC, however, stated that “there are no more problems with the T77, the temporary delay in deliveries was due to logistics.” And they assured: “In early April, the cars will be at official dealers.”
At the same time, on April 12, Andrei Mikhedov, director of the Avilon FAW brand, told Kommersant that the dealer had sold a batch of FAW Bestune T77, consisting of 15 cars (“the demand for it was high”), and a new delivery was expected within two months.
Only 2022 model year cars are currently available on dealer websites.
The recommended prices for the Bestune T77 start at almost 2.2 million rubles, follows from the price lists on the brand’s website. How much the Lada car will cost is unknown.
The FAW model line in Russia now includes the Bestune T77, as well as the B70 sedan and T55 crossover, prices for which were announced only on April 12. The brand’s website also retains the mention of the Bestune X40, but the page is not available.
Initially, as written Vedomosti, KAMAZ planned to attract FAW to the Nissan plant. However, in the end, the site went to AvtoVAZ.
The release of the first car under the Lada brand at the former Nissan plant should take place in June, said Governor Alexander Beglov. The car was planned to be shown at SPIEF in mid-June.
Now AvtoVAZ produces Lada Granta and Niva in Tolyatti. Also, at the beginning of March 2023, the serial production of the new generation Lada Vesta started, the production of which was transferred to Tolyatti from Izhevsk, but the prices for Vesta were never announced. On the site near the plant in Tolyatti, local bloggers filmed a cluster of new Vesta – white and gray.
Previously, Chinese cars under their own brand in Russia started collecting Moskvich – the plant was restarted by the city authorities after Renault left the Russian Federation, which previously owned the site. At Moskvich, models are produced that repeat JAC cars, but this has never been officially confirmed.
Even before the crisis, Lipetsk Motorinvest followed a similar path, launching the production of Evolute based on Chinese analogues, as well as Sollers in the segment of light commercial vehicles based on the former Sollers Ford plant.
Besides, as “b” wroteAvilon, which claims to have a Volkswagen plant in the Russian Federation, considered launching the production of Chery cars at it.
AvtoVAZ in 2023 actively spoke for an increase in salvage fees, and also pointed out that the interest in the former Nissan plant was due to the fact that “our competitors did not get these capacities” for low-localized assembly. Until 2024, Lada will be produced on it in the SKD mode, from which all car projects based on models from China will start.
The head of the automaker pointed out that, unlike other manufacturers, AvtoVAZ would indeed engage in localization, and would also “regulate” production at the Nissan plant, limiting it to 10,000 cars in 2023.
Although the way to restart the sites of departed automakers by localizing Chinese models is the easiest, on April 12 it became known that on the basis of the former Toyota plant in St. expected “b”launch the production of the Almaz-Antey E-Neva vehicle, the serial assembly of which has not yet started.
“We are working on the issue with Almaz-Antey on the production of e-Neva at the former Toyota plant,” said Denis Manturov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (quote from “RIA News”). “The start of car production is scheduled for 2026,” he added.
