Austrian Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler said that as of April, Austria received more than half of its gas from Russia. At the same time, at the end of December 2022, the country received 70% of gas from Russia. Thus, the share of Russian gas in Austrian purchases decreased by 20% over four months. The minister’s statement is quoted by the newspaper Handelsblatt.
According to the Austrian Energy Minister, more efforts must be made to abandon Russian gas. She also noted that Austrian gas storage facilities are 80% full and energy prices have fallen. “Now it remains to take the last step, that is, to refuse gas from Russia,” the minister said.
The share of Russian gas in Austria’s energy purchases is constantly changing. In November, the share of Russian gas in Austrian imports was 41%, in October – 23%. This is due to the fact that gas market participants are not required to report to the Ministry of Energy the exact source of origin of imported gas. This may lead to the fact that, despite efforts to reduce the share of Russian gas in imports, this share will actually increase.
