99-year-old Zoya Boguslavskaya came up with this evening and rushed to it through traffic jams
An evening in memory of film director Vadim Abdrashitov was held at the Central House of Writers. It was organized by Zoya Boguslavskaya, a writer, the widow of the poet Andrei Voznesensky, who will turn 100 years old on April 16, together with Abdrashitov’s widow, the artist Natella Toidze. There was nowhere for the apple to fall. People stood in the passage for three hours.
The evening was not tied to dates. Vadim Abdrashitov was born on January 19, 1945, and died on February 12, 2023. He was 78 years old. The organizers could not have imagined that so many people would come, so they did not even leave room for the speakers.
Abdrashitov’s student Alexey Mizgirev said that he would never forget this day: so many spectators are happiness for the director. He remembered how he had to save his master on the site from a jar of pickles flying at him. And we saw footage from Abdrashitov’s “Time of a Dancer,” where debutante Chulpan Khamatova boldly dances in a short skirt, and brine is poured on her head.
People crowded the aisles. Kama Ginkas is hiding somewhere. And some, like the 90-year-old classic Alexander Gelman and his colleague and co-author of Vadim Abdrashitov Alexander Mindadze, did not get into the hall at all and went to the restaurant. Many left the Central House of Writers with the words: “Nothing! Let’s go for a walk, reminisce and have a snack.” Vladimir Khotinenko and Sergei Ursulyak remained in the foyer, where they could clearly hear what was happening in the hall, continued communication, remembered Vadim, and they were not alone. And this is the most amazing thing that happened that evening. Abdrashitov, who had an excellent sense of humor, would have enjoyed the evening.
It was hosted by Yuri Rost. Oddly enough, he met Abdrashitov late, when his “Magnetic Storms” came out. Rost said that he never even met girls like that – on the street. He just came up and said good words about the film. From then on they began to be friends.
The Central House of Writers showed fragments from the “Parade of Planets”, “Armavir”… A shot of Sonya flying from the roof from the film “Plumbum, or a Dangerous Game”, the idea of which arose after an article in “MK” about a boy-combatant, still makes an indelible impression. It was filmed by Georgy Rerberg. Abdrashitov, after showing this film in May 2022, said that “it is interesting for any director to show a film that is many years old, to see how it looks in the context of today, what thoughts it develops and what claims it extinguishes or arouses even in the square and cube.” And the film still hits the mark today.
All evening on the screen trains were leaving somewhere, people were dancing. Handsome young men, “spirits” – Shakurov, Zaichenko, Borisov, Zharkov – invited beautiful single women to dance. And they didn’t believe their words: “It’s like we were hit by a rocket. It’s like we don’t exist.”
The rector of VGIK, Vladimir Malyshev, with difficulty made his way onto the stage, bypassing the crowd through some kind of balcony and told how he entered VGIK at the same time with Abdrashitov, who came to the entrance exams in a Volga, which was provided to him by the director of the plant. Despite his youth, he was already a shop manager at the Moscow Electric Vacuum Devices Plant. “Vadim is the truth,” said Malyshev. This is true. He is perhaps the only one who did not know compromises and followed his convictions without deviating from the path.
When Zoya Boguslavskaya arrived late, they managed to clear the way for her, and she went to the front row. Yuri Rost tried to make her sit down, but proud Zoya Borisovna in a bright green dress decisively declared: “I will stand. Abdrashitov deserves it.” And then she made a speech: “I believe that Vadim Yusupovich is one of the most serious directors of our time. He doesn’t have a single passable, not a single frivolous film. Vadim is one of my favorite directors. He was my personal friend. He could have done so much more if not for the villainous fate.”
On the way to the Central House of Writers, where Zoya Borisovna was making her way through traffic jams, she had an idea: “I came up with a film that would be called “Traffic Traffic.” If I start to remember how many violations in life occur because of them, I will get a very serious picture.”
