The ashes of several Star Trek filmmakers will be sent into outer space along with the ashes of more than 200 other people as part of the Celestis campaign, reports Reuters. We are talking about, among other things, part of the ashes of actress Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhuru. She died about a month ago.
Also sent into space are the ashes of the wife of Star Trek creator Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who played nurse Christine Chapel in the series, and visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull. Previously, the ashes of series creator Gene Roddenberry and other participants in the filming have already been sent into space.
A launch date for the rocket has not been set. The flight is planned on the Vulcan Centaur rocket, which is being developed by a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin United Launch Alliance.
Nichelle Nichols died at the age of 89 years. She is credited with breaking the stereotype that black women can only play maids and performed one of the first on-screen interracial kisses.
