Two UK editions The Times And The Daily Telegraph – called the name of the person who is believed to be responsible for the loss of valuable artifacts and art from the collection of the British Museum, which was announced August 17th. Newspapers name Peter John Higgs, a curator who has worked at the British Museum since 1993, was famous and respected. The cost of the exhibits stolen by him from the museum, some of which belong to the era of Ancient Rome, is estimated at tens of millions of dollars.
According to publications, Higgs, who headed the department of ancient Greek and ancient Roman art at the museum, apparently began to take exhibits out of storage a long time ago. He did this for the purpose of subsequent sale. The first of the stolen exhibits were exhibited by him on eBay back in 2016. He took out mostly small exhibits, such as jewelry or small figurines.
According to The Daily Telegraph, in 2020, a specialist in antiquities notified the management of the British Museum about the appearance of exhibits from his collection for sale. Higgs was listed on eBay under an assumed name. However, the PayPal account linked to the marketplace, which was linked to the Twitter account, used the curator’s real name, which allowed him to be contacted. But he was dismissed from his post only this year.
He is under investigation. According to publications, the Higgs family insists on his innocence and intends to prove it. Meanwhile, the British Museum has launched an independent review to determine how the employee was able to freely take out the art and what measures need to be taken to increase security.
