According to research company estimates IDC, in 2023, the South Korean company Samsung lost its leadership in the global smartphone market, which it held for 12 years. The American Apple came in first place, shipping 234.6 million smartphones at the end of the year, while Samsung delivered 226.6 million. Apple’s global market share at the end of 2023 was 20.1%, Samsung’s was 19.4%. If the American company increased its market share by 3.7% compared to 2022, then the South Korean company decreased it by 13.6%.
In third place in the world is the Chinese Xiaomi with shipments of 145.9 million smartphones and a market share of 12.5%. Two more Chinese companies, Oppo and Transsion, round out the global top 5 with shares of 8.8% and 8.1%, respectively.
The entire global smartphone market, according to IDC estimates, decreased by 3.2% in 2023 – 1.17 billion new devices were released. The authors of the report note that this is the lowest figure in the last ten years, and cite macroeconomic uncertainty and overstocking of warehouses at the beginning of the year as the reasons. However, IDC believes that in the second half of the year the market showed signs of recovery – in the fourth quarter growth was a solid 8.5% (326.1 million units), exceeding forecasts – previously expected growth of only 7.3%.
