HAS When it’s time to go back to school, the state of young people’s mental health should alert us. It is revealing of the malaise of our generation faced with the challenges of today and tomorrow. In this forum, we want to bring our young eyes to this health crisis which is talked about too little.

The unprecedented and anxiety-provoking situation that we have been experiencing for several years has seriously worsened in recent months for all and especially for us young people. Not a day goes by that we don’t hear about a new catastrophe linked to global warming, not a day goes by that we don’t see the tragedies of wars all around the globe, not a day without being told that the world we know is coming to an end! Faced with these difficult futures, how can we not be anxious?

We are often told that we are incredibly lucky to live today rather than thirty years ago. And yet… And yet it will be our generation that will be confronted with the climatic, geopolitical and political problems that are strongly looming in the near future. These dangers are among the worst known to history. So, in the face of these threatening futures, how can we not be anxious?

A global lack of action

The years go by and there are more and more warnings from experts on many subjects (environment, climate, biodiversity, geopolitics, resources, etc.). Yet we do not see global actions: the 2015 Paris climate agreement is not being respected, the risk of war is growing all over the world…

The decision-makers have promised to do everything to build a sustainable, peaceful and equitable future, but behind the fine words we are still looking for large-scale actions. Faced with these promises which are, for the moment, far from being kept, how can we not be anxious?

We are reminded almost daily that we have to work hard in school to be able to get into the best universities and have a bright future. But what good is it if this future does not exist? In France, the school of the Republic has gradually locked itself into a logic of competitiveness (grades, Parcoursup, rankings, etc.) which adds stress to young people who are already very worried about their future.

More integration of young people into collective action

Faced with this constant stress for our personal futures, how can we not be anxious? Ladies and gentlemen elected officials, anxiety and eco-anxiety among young people are problems to be taken very seriously because they concern not just a few individuals but an entire generation! What we are asking for are strong actions for young people and for the future.
