Anthony van Dyck’s sketch found in barn sold at Sotheby’s auction for $3 million

Painting by Dutch artist Anthony van Dyck, discovered near New York in 2002, was sold at Sotheby`s for $3 million, reported CNN. The painting lay in a barn under a layer of bird droppings, and in 2019, experts discovered that it was a painting by Anthony van Dyck.
According to the Artnet portal, in 2002, a painting was discovered on a farm near New York, which depicts a naked old man. The found study was bought by collector Albert Roberts for $600. He suggested that the painting belongs to the era of the golden age of Dutch painting, and submitted the work for examination.
In 2019, art critic Susan Barnes announced that the work was in fact a well-preserved study for Saint Jerome with an Angel by Anthony van Dyck. The artist painted it in the early years of his work, this picture is now in the Museum of Rotterdam.
The owner of the painting died in 2021. The auction house Sotheby`s said that part of the proceeds will go to the Albert B. Roberts Foundation, which helps artists.
