Analogues of the Soviet “Beryozka” will appear in Russia

Duty-free shops will open in Moscow and St. Petersburg for diplomats, consuls, their families, as well as for employees of international organizations located in Russia, should from a government decree published on the official portal of legal information. Only diplomatic employees will be able to get into duty free shops upon presentation of an appropriate certificate.
It will be possible to buy goods in these stores for rubles, US dollars and euros, the price tags for products will also be indicated in three currencies. The resolution notes that we are talking about retail trade only in those goods that are under the customs procedure of duty-free trade, namely, alcohol, tobacco products, perfumes and cosmetics, jewelry, smartphones, watches and confectionery.
In order to buy a large batch of alcohol for an official event, it will be necessary to present an application, which will indicate the purpose of the purchase and the amount of alcohol, and must be signed by an official representative of a diplomatic mission, consulate or international organization.
After the purchase, a receipt will be issued, which may contain information about the buyer. This information, together with a list of purchased goods, will be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a monthly basis.
It is specified that so far there will be two such stores: in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There will be round-the-clock video surveillance, and camera recordings will be stored for 30 days. All trade will be under the control of customs officers. The exact location of the stores has not yet been determined. The decision will come into force on August 27.
The Beryozka chain of stores, which has existed in the USSR since 1961, can be called an analogue of outlets that are preparing to open in Russia. Their buyers were not only diplomats, but also foreign specialists and Soviet workers abroad, including the military and sailors, who could buy equipment, clothes, food for foreign currency in Beryozka. The first such stores were opened at Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports, as well as in the Ukraine and Leningradskaya hotels.
