The structure of the Fplus holding (formerly F+Tech) and the Strigo Capital fund has developed a platform that allows you to run any Android applications on a domestic system. OS users will be able to purchase a license for the service separately. The developers predict the sale of about 2 million devices running the Aurora OS in all segments as early as 2024. Experts believe that such a step will allow Aurora to increase its audience, but they warn that applications may not work correctly on the emulator, and the American Google will prevent devices on Aurora from gaining access to its services.
The application developer Avroid (including the IT holding Fplus, formerly F+tech) at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) will present a platform that allows you to run any Android applications on the Aurora OS (owned by Rostelecom). The system creates a second workspace based on the open source Android Open Source Project (AOSP), this is a container that allows you to run any applications developed for the Android system on the Aurora OS, Avroid managing partner Dmitry Komissarov explained to Kommersant. He added that in 2024, sales of about 2 million devices on the system are expected in all segments.
According to a company representative, the Avroid platform will be sold separately for Aurora OS users. He did not specify exactly how much the license costs. Owners of smartphones running an OS with the platform will have access to “hundreds of thousands” of mobile applications, which are also presented in RuStore, including the VKontakte social network, Yandex and Sberbank services, the company assured. Managing partner of the Fplus IT holding Alexey Melnikov believes that the platform “opens up great opportunities for the Aurora OS in terms of entering the consumer market.”
In August, at a meeting of Roskomnadzor, representatives of the regulator estimated the refinement and adaptation of applications to the Aurora OS at 300 billion rubles. until 2027 (see Kommersant, August 14). At the beginning of May, Fplus bought 100% of the Avroid OS application developer from the founders (see Kommersant on May 5). In June, Alexey Melnikov, together with co-owner of Fplus Vladimir Kornev, became partners of the Strigo Capital investment fund, which was launched by the founder and co-owner of MyOffice Dmitry Komissarov to support startups. Avroid entered the portfolio of Strigo Capital; under the terms of the agreement, the fund received a controlling stake in the company. Investments in the project in 2023 amounted to 300 million rubles.
Despite the readiness of the Aurora OS, an insurmountable obstacle is the need to transfer the entire range of software, which takes time, says Senior Vice President of Rostelecom PJSC Kirill Menshov: “Apple’s MacOS ecosystem developed in a similar way, which at one time was losing to Microsoft Windows in terms of range BY. Then Parallels came to the rescue, allowing Windows applications to run on the Mac ecosystem.” Now, Mr. Menshov notes, Avroid solves a similar problem – “allows you to run applications written for an American OS on a Russian one.”
The head of the board of directors of Basalt SPO, Alexey Smirnov, admits that Avroid will make the use of domestic smartphones on the Russian system more attractive: “It will be possible to say how universal such a solution is after a closer acquaintance with the platform; the available free emulators for Android do not provide correct operation for all applications.” According to Mr. Smirnov, large application software developers, including VK and Yandex, are interested in creating native applications for an OS with a large consumer base, and, perhaps, with the help of the Aurora emulator, they can increase it. Vedomosti reported that the RuStore Android application marketplace, owned by VK, is adapting it for the Aurora OS. VK and Yandex declined to comment.
Roman Mylitsyn, head of advanced research at Astra Group of Companies, notes that the problem of running Android applications on domestic OSes really exists and developers use emulators to solve it. The Avroid emulator, according to him, works with the mobile mode of the Astra Linux OS and other Russian operating systems: “In this way, the Russian mobile ecosystem is expanding.”
Kommersant’s interlocutor in the development market adds that similar emulators are also used to run applications and the Google store on Huawei mobile devices, which entered the market after the Chinese vendor lost the license of the American company due to sanctions: “Many users want to be able to use original applications from the developers of the Android operating system. Emulators are free, developers make money from advertising. But in any case, these are “crutches” that periodically work incorrectly, in addition, Google itself does its best to prevent Huawei devices from gaining access to its proprietary applications.” The interlocutor suggests that the American company can block services adapted using Avroid for Aurora.
