Sergei Abramov, an elegant writer, a visionary, an easy-going, easy-going person, has died. And with this ease and ease, releasing fascinating books (“Above the Rainbow”, “Two Under One Umbrella”, “Red, Red and a Dangerous Man”), he worked in Soviet times in the most orthodox official publication – the newspaper Pravda, in art department, which was also headed by the very informal Nikolai Potapov. Perhaps, only with the assistance of these two non-opportunistic thinking people could my article about Mikhail Ancharov’s novel “Boxwood Forest” appear on the pages of the printed organ of the CPSU Central Committee, which was destroyed by the Literaturnaya Gazeta, where Sergei Abramov began his creative career and where I was at the time of its appearance he worked on that “Pravdinskaya” hosanna and did not agree with the negative assessment of Mikhail Ancharov’s work.
In the democratically open house of Serezha Abramov on Rusakovskaya, where the bright representative of the great circus dynasty Teresa Durova was in charge of culinary matters together with her husband, I met amazing people: film playwright Isaac Friedberges, young prose writer Isfandiyar, classic of Russian literature Anatoly Aleksin, secretary of the section of children’s writers of the Moscow writers’ organization Inessa Kholodova, the creator of the Russian Children’s Fund, Albert Likhanov, who invited Sergei to become the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Semya” and the magazines published as supplements to this newspaper, including the excitingly interesting monthly for youth “We”.
Personally, I am grateful to Seryozha Abramov not only for publishing an article about Mikhail Ancharov, which helped the novel “Boxwood Forest” appear as a separate book, but also for the fact that I, who was not very welcome in the then Soviet censored publishing houses, was welcomed in “Moscow Worker”, where was directed by prose writer Dmitry Evdokimov. One day, the three of us, heavily loaded, rolled into my house to discuss Seryozha’s future book, and it ended with the rapid release of a collection of my stories, “Winter Haze.”
Many, many things are remembered in connection with Seryozha. The way they were present at the reading of Anatoly Aleksin’s stories. Anatoly Georgievich certainly organized these readings and invited friends to listen to comments before submitting the text to the magazine “Yunost”… How they drank coffee in the “Pravdinsky” buffet and chatted about the latest premieres with theater expert Nina Agisheva… How they sat all day long at international sessions film festivals held in the Great Hall of the Central House of Writers…
