An award for the best film dialogues will appear in Russia

A cinematic award has been established in Russia for the best dialogues in cinema. The idea of its creation belongs to the producer, director of the Institute of Cinema at the Higher School of Economics, Alexander Akopov, and the writer, screenwriter Alexander Tsypkin. This year it will be awarded for the first time, and domestic full-length and short films and TV series released in theaters or on online platforms from September 1, 2022 to September 1, 2023 can apply for it.
The jury of the award included: journalist, first editor-in-chief of Vogue Russia magazine Alena Doletskaya, actor and TV presenter Nikolai Fomenko, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor Tatyana Chernigovskaya, writer Sergei Minaev, comedian and TV presenter Evgeny Chebatkov.
In addition to its founders and the chairman of the selection committee, film critic and festival curator Yegor Moskvitin, producers Vadim Goryainov and Alexandra Remizova, People’s Artist of Russia, artistic director of the Ermolova Theater Oleg Menshikov and People’s Artist of Russia Konstantin Khabensky were invited to the award board.
According to Mr. Tsypkin, he and Mr. Akopov had been nurturing the idea of a separate niche award specifically for dialogues for a long time, despite the presence in the Russian context of the Slovo screenwriting award, which has existed since 2013. “I believe that at the heart of any good film is the script, but at the same time, screenwriters are underrated,” says the writer. “And we would like them to be rock stars. After all, it is dialogues and quotes from them that provide films with popular love, while the names of the authors of favorite lines and memes are, unfortunately, often unfamiliar to viewers.”
Copyright holders of films and TV series will be able to apply for the award from October 15 to November 4. To select the nominees, a commission was created, which included representatives of the film industry, film critics and journalists. In addition, an anonymous survey will be conducted among selected experts, as well as an open vote of viewers on the VKontakte social network.
According to Mr. Moskvitin, today in Russian cinema the tone is set by the so-called generation of new quiet ones, that is, directors and screenwriters in whose films the characters are confused, therefore cannot formulate their thoughts, mumble or are completely silent, which is a reflection of the confusion and silence of people in Russia . “This generation has given us a lot,” he comments, “but now a new one is being born, and I really want to encourage their voices.”
The creators of the award hope that new witty comedians and authors of heartbreaking dramatic monologues will appear in Russian cinema. Finding them among the existing writers of films and TV series is their goal.
They will be awarded in the categories “Best Comedy Scene”, “Best Dramatic Scene”, “Best Dialogues in a Feature Film”, “Best Dialogues in a TV Series”, “Best Dialogues in a Short Film”, “Best Dialogues in an Adapted Film or TV Series” , “Best Screenplay Debut” and “Dialogue with Oneself” (this definition hides the best monologue). In addition, there will be special prizes from Telegram channels and the award partner, the publishing house Independent Media, as well as an audience award, which will be awarded based on voting results on VKontakte. The award ceremony will take place on November 30 at the Ermolova Theater.
