Patriarch Kirill and Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra on July 12 signed an agreement on the transfer of the Trinity icon by Andrei Rublev to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra for free use, according to site Moscow Patriarchate.
The agreement was signed between the Tretyakov Gallery, where the icon used to be kept, and the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. Now the icon is in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. According to decision Patriarch, “Trinity” will be located in the main church of the Russian Orthodox Church until July 18.
“A historic event has taken place. Today we symbolically testify that the country lives in a different time, in a different era. Gone – we hope, irrevocably – is the time when the shrines were withdrawn from the Church,” Patriarch Kirill said after the ceremony of signing the treaty.
The signing ceremony was attended, in particular, by St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, State Secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev, First Deputy Minister of Culture Sergey Obryvalin, Metropolitan Varsonofy of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, Bishop of Kronstadt, Viceroy of the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra Nazarius.
“Trinity” is one of the masterpieces of Russian icon art, created by Andrei Rublev in the first quarter of the 15th century. In 1929 the icon was transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery. On May 15, 2023 it became known about decision President Vladimir Putin to transfer this icon to the Russian Orthodox Church.
