An Afghan killed in Colmar after protesting against an urban rodeo, an open judicial investigation

A judicial inquiry was opened on Monday, August 15, due to the death, the day before, of a 27-year-old Afghan shot and killed following an urban rodeo in Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin. An investigating judge was seized of the head of“assassination against X”prosecutor Catherine Sorita-Minard told Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding that “the perpetrator(s) are on the run”.
The facts occurred Sunday, at midday, in the Europe district, in Colmar. A group of Afghans shared a barbecue, before being bothered by the noise of a scooter whose driver was performing a rodeo. An altercation ensued with the driver who eventually left the scene before returning, shooting one of the group of Afghans and fleeing, according to a police source’s account.
“The situation has degenerated (…) with the group of Afghans to which the victim belongs and a group to which the driver of the scooter belonged”, reported another police source, without mentioning a rodeo or a rally of scooters. According to this source, the shooter was not necessarily the driver of the scooter.

The man was hit in the chest. Hospitalized in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

The mayor of Colmar, Eric Straumann (Les Républicains), estimated on Facebook that “the death of this young man affects[ait] the whole population of Colmar”. He called to “not to feed social networks with comments that are as excessive as they are useless” and to leave “the police do their job”.
