Amazing cinema by Yuri Vaksman: played 80 roles, organized 20 production projects

Yuri Vaksman died during the international film festival “Simply Good Cinema”, which he himself organized in Yaroslavl ten years ago and all these years he presented modern fiction and documentary films there, inviting Russian and foreign filmmakers. This year, the animation program is presented at the festival by Oscar winner Alexander Petrov, who lives in Yaroslavl.
Vaksman repeated the fate of Sergei Puskepalis, who also died in Yaroslavl during the days when a theater festival organized with his participation was taking place there. And he will also be buried before the completion of his “Just a Good Movie” (closing is scheduled for March 30).
Together they starred in “The Tailor from Brooklyn” by Yevgeny Serov, which Yuri Vaksman produced and where he played the main role – an elderly Jewish emigrant, tailor Avdon Moskovitz, who wholeheartedly believes in democracy. Puskepalis’s hero, who unexpectedly appeared in his life at a difficult moment and introduced himself as an insurance agent, advised him not to be so gullible. It takes place in America in the 70s. Moskowitz survived the horrors of the Holocaust, lost his wife and two children, and saved his third son, prudently sending him to his uncle in New York. But an adult guy has problems, and his father is trying to help him.
The “Simply Good Cinema” festival is the founder of the “YarCinema” company, which was also organized by Vaksman long before the now popular film commissions in the regions. For many years he helped filmmakers organize filming in Yaroslavl, prepared documentation, selected locations, placed groups in hotels, and supplied them with food. His services were used by Sergei Ursulyak when he filmed “Isaev”, Alexander Proshkin on “Doctor Zhivago”, Georgy Shengelia on “Uncontrollable Skid” and “Scavenger”. This is where it all began, and then Vaksman was one of the first to organize independent production in Yaroslavl.
He made his debut in the iconic post-perestroika “Body” by Nikita Khubov, where he has a large and serious role. Then the cinema did not indulge him with large-scale works. He was offered mainly episodes where his acting nature and colorful texture could clearly manifest themselves. He was invited to his films by Alexander Veledinsky – “Russian” and “In the Cape Town Port”, Pavel Lungin – “Oligarch”, Georgy Shengelia – “One Real Day” and “Uncontrollable Skid”, Yusup Razykov – “Sabre Dance”, Fyodor Bondarchuk – “Inhabited Island”… He worked a lot in TV series, including “Ranevskaya” and the popular “Molodezhka”. A cook, a doorman, a photographer… His heroes often didn’t even have a name, but Waxman took any role, even the tiniest one, seriously and was grateful for it. He starred in almost 80 films, which is incredible for a provincial actor, and produced more than 20 films, which is absolutely exceptional. And here he is a pioneer, foreshadowing the subsequent efforts of many people aimed at developing cinema in the regions. And he did everything himself, did not wait for instructions from above.
