A new album by Alla Pugacheva has appeared on streaming services. A collection of 20 songs by the artist under the general title “PS” was released on Yandex Music, MTS Music and VKontakte. The album includes compositions recorded at Pugacheva’s concert in the Kremlin Palace in 2019. Among them are her hits: “Love Like a Dream,” “On a Horse,” “Live in My Skin,” and “The Woman Who Sings.” In the live version of the last track, you can hear the artist communicating with her daughter during the performance.
The cover uses a black and white photograph of the singer with Ukrainian producer Natella Krapivina, which was on the poster for the concert in Minsk in 2019. Why did the artist need to release an album with old songs? Music critic Oleg Karmunin believes that this is Pugacheva’s next attempt to say goodbye to the public: “This is an old recording of a 2019 concert, probably it is symbolic in the sense that it was the last calm year, then COVID-19 and everything else began. Alla Pugacheva sends greetings to us from that era.
The album is called “PS”, it seems to me that this is also very symptomatic. It’s as if this is a postscript under all of Alla Pugacheva’s work, the last thing she says. I think it’s interesting because I remember at least three times when Pugacheva left the stage. In 1995, after the album “Don’t Hurt Me, Gentlemen,” she organized a big farewell celebration at the Metelitsa club. It was the presentation of the album, and it was announced that it was the last. Then, in my opinion, in 1998 there was also a farewell tour, and in 2009, with the album “Invitation to Sunset,” the singer once again toured Russia and held a press conference, saying that this was definitely it now.
And in 2024, Alla Pugacheva releases the album “PS”, it seems to me that within the history of Russian pop music it is quite interesting how many times she puts an ellipsis and still continues to do something. To be honest, I expect that in another 10-15 years she will release something like “PPS” or maybe some kind of album “I’m coming back”, because this person is a block, she is eternal, in fact” .
Users were confused by the lack of official statements. Pugacheva did not accompany the release of the collection with any comments on her pages on social networks. Representatives of the artist also refused to explain. Perhaps the album is just a preparation for some more high-profile release, says Anton Pronin, general director of the Monolith Records record label:
“From a commercial point of view, let’s just say that Alla Borisovna is now, of course, not at the peak of her popularity. It seems to me that this is hardly an attempt to make money; I have little faith in the great commercial success of this material on streaming platforms. Of course, there is a generation that will listen to this, but we are not talking about millions of rubles. This is probably closer to a PR reason than a business decision. I think, rather, we should expect some kind of PR activity, including related to the appearance of the album or, conversely, which will draw attention to the release.
Again, you need to understand that the streaming platforms did not release this album themselves, but some copyright holder. It is unlikely that Alla Borisovna herself negotiated with the services; there is probably a distributor or label.
As for the radio, where they allegedly stopped playing her songs, there were rumors that after the appearance of some political statements by Alla Borisovna, some radio stations removed her songs from the air. I’m not sure about that. Whether or not radio stations will air Pugacheva’s songs depends on how much people like these songs, because now they work very simply. If they see that songs have somehow grown on streaming services and entered the charts, then radio stations will certainly air them.”
Alla Pugacheva released her last studio album, “Invitation to Sunset,” in 2008. In 2013, the singer released a collection of songs written by composer Yuri Chernavsky in vinyl record format.
