Without alcohol and buffet: Turkish hoteliers want to reconsider the all inclusive format. It will not be possible to abandon the system completely, but it is necessary to reform it, said Kaan Kavaloglu, president of the Association of Hoteliers and Tour Operators of the Mediterranean. In his opinion, unlimited drinks will be the first to disappear from all-inclusive hotels. Tourists will be offered a basic set of alcohol, but will have to pay extra for premium whiskey. Why is business pushing for change? And will the usual format of rest be maintained? Ivan Khorushevsky sorted it out.

Turkish hoteliers explain the need for reforms by economic considerations. Annual inflation in the country has reached 60%, excise taxes on alcohol are regularly rising, and the cost of dinner in local restaurants, as Kommersant FM’s interlocutors note, is almost higher than in Parisian or London establishments. Under these conditions, all inclusive does not pay for itself.

Nevertheless, there is no longer any need to lure clients, says Maxim Pristavko, deputy chairman of the board of directors of the Jet Travel holding:

“If earlier hotels tried to attract customers as much as possible and came up with all sorts of tricks, including all inclusive and ultra all inclusive, now Turkey is recognized as a country for a very good quality holiday, and hotels are selling well.”

Turkish businessmen claim that over the past 10 years, customer demands have also changed, so the all inclusive reform is long overdue. For example, tourists increasingly began to refuse alcohol, which means it is logical to offer them programs without drinks. Relaxing on a sun lounger with a cocktail in hand is not a problem, but for a fee.

The “buffet” has also allegedly become unclaimed – consumers have too different tastes, explains vice-president of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Dmitry Gorin: “Now we see that among people buying trips to Turkey, packages with a la carte restaurants are becoming very popular, when It is possible to order dishes from the menu.”

Hoteliers assure that the scarce all inclusive will be even more profitable for vacationers. According to businessmen, the cost of vacation will decrease by 7-10%. For Russians, this is a significant argument, given that this year Turkey entered the top 5 most expensive destinations for the first time, notes Art Tour CEO Dmitry Arutyunov:

“The cost of food, especially in the segment of inexpensive hotels, has now increased significantly; they account for about 15% of the total cost of a tour package. That is, with a tour package price of $800, the all inclusive system will cost at least $100. If you multiply this by the number of people on a trip for a family of four, the cost of food will be $400. Giving up them is a significant saving, especially if you do not enjoy the “benefits of civilization” in the form of unlimited alcohol.”

Some hotels have already begun to change the conditions of the all-inclusive system. However, according to Kommersant FM’s interlocutors, we are talking only about hotels in the luxury segment. But the mass consumer will not appreciate the reform, even if it makes trips to Turkey cheaper, says Maya Kotlyar, head of the individual tourism company Mayel Travel:

“First of all, the consumer of the Turkish product is married couples with children who want to get just the full package. Therefore, the lion’s share of hotels will never give up all inclusive, otherwise they will lose half of the Russian market.

I note that alternative destinations to Turkey, for example, the same Emirates, have, on the contrary, begun to develop the “all inclusive” concept.”

It is unclear, however, how interested Turkish hoteliers are in the preferences of domestic tourists. In 2022, for example, Germans most often vacationed at local resorts. It is possible that the situation will repeat this year. According to VTsIOM, only 3% of Russians can afford to spend a summer vacation abroad.
