From the director Ruslan Bratov, who was silent for five years, they expected a masterpiece, and he did not disappoint
At the 30th Window to Europe Russian Film Festival in Vyborg, Alexei Uchitel presented The Walk, which won him three awards in 2003. Much has been forgotten – for example, where his beard disappeared during the festival. But he, together with his young student, tried to convey the former feeling of freedom and youth in the film with the strange name “Mittelmarch”.
On the eve of the premiere, we saw footage from 2003, where Alexei Uchitel receives awards for Walk. Just a week has passed, and he lost his beard. In the first shots she was, and then disappeared. How this happened, the director himself does not remember – he assumes that he shaved her from happiness. The film’s cameraman Yuri Klimenko admitted in Vyborg that he filmed the beginning and end of the film, as he was actually paralyzed due to problems with his spine. He was replaced by a colleague and at that time documentary filmmaker Pavel Kostomarov, who is now making feature films (behind him is the series Epidemic). Yevgeny Tsyganov then just came to the “Workshop of Pyotr Fomenko”, as well as his partners in the film Irina Pegova and Pavel Barshak. All of them received the main roles from the Teacher, and the “old men” of the theater – only cameos, tiny episodes. There was nothing good in this scenario for young actors.
Alexei Uchitel recalled how, in order to maintain balance, so that tall partners would not tower over Irina Pegova, they invented 32-centimeter platforms for her, on which she walked around St. Petersburg. And when it was necessary to climb Isakiy, I put on lower platforms, 22 cm high.
For Yevgeny Tsyganov, a lot was just beginning with the Walk. Alexei Uchitel knows how to light the stars. And now he was presenting the work of his recent student, in fact, “Walk” number two, only from a completely different era. Sofya Meledina graduated from VGIK only a year ago – and now she has made her debut at the main national film festival today. “Walk” seems to be repeated in the fabulous, fictional “Mittelmarch”. Here, too, there is a love triangle, walks around St. Petersburg. But an important role is given to grandmother Era Ziganshina – one of the few actresses who have remained at their real age, abandoning anti-aging tricks. Her heroine works in a museum where her former lover and sculptor works as a security guard. Grandmother brings together 18-year-old grandson Mitya (the silent role of Ivan Zlobin) with the reckless pickpocket Kowalski performed by the plastic and expressive actor of the Alexandrinsky Theater Ilya Del. He had already starred with Evgeny Tsyganov in Alexei Uchitel’s Tsoi and now said that he tried to do everything himself: burn on fire, ride a motorcycle, although it was scary, since his partner Ivan Zlobin had just received his license.
And then the beautiful Polina appears between them – one for two. She was played by the Serbian actress Tina Stoyilkovic, who was invited after seeing her in the graduation performance “Three Comrades” at the Theater School. B. Shchukin. Tina told MK about what prospects await her in the near future, because she did not leave Russia: “Nina Dvorzhetskaya was my master at the Shchukin school. When I came from Serbia to apply, I didn’t speak Russian at all. Before the start of the special operation, everything was going well. And now they are afraid to invite me – as an actress with a foreign passport. I am trying to find a job in Serbia so that I can work in parallel there and in Russia, but since I studied in Moscow, all my creative connections are here.”
Alexey Uchitel says that he sees his task when working with novice directors not to interfere with them, but to protect them from mistakes in the craft. Powerful forces were thrown into the new project. So, Alexander Mindadze had a hand in the script. And Sofia Meledina was most interested in the abusive relationship between Polina and Kowalski. She wanted to make films about unusual people and representatives of her younger generation. Presenting her film, she thanked the nanny who stayed with her six-month-old child. And after the show, the baby was already there.
So far, the strongest picture of the game competition was Ruslan Bratov’s “Express”, from which many expected a masterpiece after the short film “Lalai-Balalai”, awarded the Kinotavr Grand Prix back in 2017. After a successful start, a five-year pause loomed. MK asked Ruslan why he was silent for so long. “A lot has happened to me during this time: a child was born, I bought an apartment, a car, wrote scripts, shot commercials, earned money, tried to find money for a film. I wanted to make my own material,” Ruslan said.
The city where the heroes of his new film live is collective: it is Cherkessk, Karachaevsk, and Teberda. “I was born in Cherkessk and left it at the age of 17. My sister lives there,” says Ruslan. — She recently lost the hatch on the street. They seem to be in demand again. In the film, the heroes steal sewer manholes, which are expensive. And when one of these is taken away, a bottomless hole will open, associated with the image of the country. Three years continued work on the “Express”. The pandemic temporarily froze the project. And then it was not easy to shoot in Karachay-Cherkessia. We can say that they bet on zero, like the heroes of the film, they hoped for a miracle, and it happened.
The main role was played by a graduate of the directing department of GITIS Lev Zulkarnaev. Ruslan Bratov himself studied there in the workshop of Leonid Kheifets. The role played by Pavel Vorozhtsov was intended for Yevgeny Syty. The film is dedicated to him. Together with Syty, the role was thought out, but the actor recently passed away after a serious oncological disease. In Vyborg, we saw him in Ivan Sosnin’s Distant Relatives, and this is a first-class work by an almost unrecognizable artist who has lost dozens of kilograms.
