The festival began with the premiere of Alexei Fedorchenko’s documentary hoax “The Coin of the Country of Malawi”. You could just go and shoot. The characters themselves entered the frame. Everything happened spontaneously. Maria Shukshina did not see the film, although she could star in it. Andrey Merzlikin is even trying to find her in the corridors of the Palace of Culture, with whom they are playing a play together. But for some reason it does not, and this has its own dramaturgy. Sometimes life is like a joke. For example, the ship “Danube”, on which Shukshin died during filming, is now moored in Moscow and renamed “Alexander Blok”. Fedorchenko claims to be a discovery in Shukshin studies. Believe it or not, but in the film there is a frame from “Kalina Krasnaya”, where Vasily Makarovich strangely looks directly into the camera and is clearly unhappy with something. Fedorchenko suggested that he was outraged by the work of the operator. For the sake of the beauty of the picture, he showed self-will, and Shukshin had no choice but to endure, since the film was shot on scarce film without the possibility of reshooting.

The feature film competition, whose jury was headed by Alexei Fedorchenko, opened with the debut film “On the Eve” by Alisa Erokhina, who also tried to work on the verge of feature and documentary cinema. And she wanted to find an actor for the role of a 16-year-old guy from the same environment as her hero, so that he would become a conductor of reality. And I found Artem Yakovlev on the street, who sells alcohol in one of the stores in a residential area of ​​St. Petersburg. The guy is left to his own devices, experiencing difficult feelings because of his father, who left the family, spying on his mistress, whom he is ready to kill. This suffering heroine, who has a dozen dogs, was subtly and tenderly played by Daria Ekamasova. Petersburg on the screen is again gangster and dangerous, reminiscent of a hopeless province with its customs. And the real Joker, capable of anything, wanders aimlessly around it.

The problem of fathers and sons has become a key one for Russian cinema. Director Ivan Sosnin from Yekaterinburg presented in the out-of-competition program the film “Far Close” with Yevgeny Syty in the title role. His hero, a geography teacher, never left his native Khabarovsk, but at the same time he tells his students about Baikal and other protected places of an unknown country. Thanks to his acquaintance with a woman in social networks (played by Elena Yakovleva), he will make a trip from Khabarovsk to Moscow, and now this trip is perceived as a farewell tour of the artist himself. The funniest scenes evoke heavy feelings: there is a living person on the screen, but he is not and never will be.

The 30th anniversary of the festival was celebrated with the display of iconic paintings. One of them – “Makarov” by Vladimir Khotinenko – received the main prize in 1993. He himself recalled the 90s, Sverdlovsk of that time, where he lived and filmed, and where not a day passed without someone being flunked. Then there was a joke about bankers: 25 years is old age. Khotinenko talked about why this time is so often remembered and even young filmmakers constantly turn to him. Yes, because today there is no such enthusiasm and desire to make films, as it was then. On the screen – the phenomenal Sergey Makovetsky with “Makarov” in his hand, his marvelous partners Elena Mayorova and Irina Metlitskaya, who have not been in this world for ages. “Makarov” at one time received all the prizes, and then seemed to have fallen out of context and is now returning again. “Now cinema has become a book that sits on a shelf. Books as a reminder. They are, but who reads them? Vladimir Khotinenko said. Now films are collecting dust on the shelves, but sometimes they are removed from there.
