The Satire Theater is preparing for its 100th season
On October 1, the Satire Theater will open its hundredth season. It was on this day a century ago that this team was born. Its current artistic director, Sergei Gazarov, assured that he wants to follow the glorious history, when Tatyana Peltzer, Georgy Menglet, Olga Aroseva, Andrei Mironov, Vera Vasilyeva appeared on stage… He promised to take everyone into the second century.
“As you move into the second century, you naturally take stock,” says Sergei Gazarov. — I would not like to leave aside a single episode from the past century. We’re taking everyone into the next century.”
A year has passed since the president of the Satire Theater Alexander Shirvindt cut the ribbon on the children’s stage on Sportivnaya, where performances will be staged only for young audiences. There will be two premieres there before the New Year. There are more than 120 artists in the troupe, and everyone must be given the opportunity to express themselves. “An artist must work, and children’s performances are a difficult product,” says the artistic director. “Nevertheless, our folk artists are participating in two premieres, namely “Louise the Goat” and the digital “Thumbelina.” Veterans fight for roles.” “Thumbelina” was “digitized” because, according to Gazarov, there are no children today without gadgets, and they hold them instead of pacifiers. Work continues on the “Classics in Modern Reading” program, which was launched by Lermontov’s “Masquerade”. A new twist and unusual shades will be found in the classics, and an orchestra will be used to bring it to life.
The theater has four stages. One of them, Progress, is awaiting reconstruction. It took two years to develop a new concept (its author was the artist Evgeniy Mitta), subsequent examinations, calculations, and approvals. The mechanism will be launched soon. Changes are also expected in the main building on Triumfalnaya Square. The Nikitins’ equestrian circus was once located there. Its dome has been preserved and will also be updated. The old will be connected to the new – a media façade will appear.
In the near future we will see the premiere of “Ivan Vasilyevich” based on the play by Mikhail Bulgakov, directed by Sergei Gazarov, created for this theater. Rehearsals went on, but the performance was never performed. “We decided to return it to the theater,” said Gazarov. “We have a very unusual story, and largely thanks to the production designer Vladimir Arefiev.” They promise that everything will not be the same as in the famous film by Leonid Gaidai, but comparisons are inevitable. The role of the Tsar will be played by Yuri Vasiliev, who has served in the theater since 1976. “I’m a happy person,” he says. — I was invited to six Moscow theaters, and I chose the Theater of Satire. My choice turned out to be correct. I wouldn’t want to change anything in my life. I worked with Valentin Pluchek during the “golden age” of our theater, when Papanov, Mironov, Mishulin, Aroseva appeared on the stage. I remember the times when spectators burned fires at night in order to be the first to receive two tickets to the performance in the morning. I worked with different directors, up to Antoine Vitez. When I first came to the theater, I had 34 performances a month and participated in the crowd. Then I worked under the leadership of Alexander Anatolyevich Shirvindt. He yelled at me so much that I said: “Dad didn’t yell at me like you did.” To which he replied: “Ask my family. I only yell at those I love.”
Another premiere is “Pygmalion” directed by director and artist Victor Kramer. Beaumarchais’s The Barber of Seville is planned for April. It will be directed by Yuri Muravitsky, who is expected to “walk freely in his own imagination.” Even before the final decision was made on the possibility of staging this play, Gazarov had a dialogue with Shirvindt: “Shouldn’t we take a swing at Figaro? – “Without Andryusha (Mironov. — S.H.) this is impossible”. Let’s see who was right.
On the eve of the hundredth season, Shirvindt was prone to philosophizing: “When you live for a long time, you think: why? But there is no way out, once you were born. We have to adapt somehow. There is a widespread process of masters leaving, and it is accelerating. There is only one hope – to resist the feeling that everything has already happened. We live our lives and don’t remember that we need to live today.” Alexander Anatolyevich spoke about the need to resist the monotony of propaganda, which is akin to vulgarity, since it deforms the great concepts of “Motherland” and “patriotism.” He recalled old Moscow, the house in which he was born, the school where the children of the leaders went, and they were not picked up by car, but dropped off before reaching the place. Shirvindt recalled the legendary cinema of the re-film: “We ran away from classes with classmates to get to the 8.30 screening of “Tanker “Derbent”. I still know it by heart. After watching the film, we ate a sandwich on the boulevard and went to the 11 o’clock screening of “Tanker Derbent” at Khudozhestvenny. The Moscow that Shirvindt remembered, with its fruit shops, liverwurst, and disappeared houses, is gone forever. He calls the theater of satire his small homeland. In the anniversary season, the master is preparing for a tour in Uzbekistan, where he will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his long-time visit to this beautiful republic. And “Ivan Vasilyevich” will be shown in St. Petersburg.
