Ivan Aivazovsky’s painting “Moonlit Night” from 1878 was sold at the Moscow auction house. It went under the hammer for 92 million rubles.

“The greatest excitement among art connoisseurs was expectedly caused by the pearl of the collection and the main top lot of the auction – the seascape of Constantinople with the towers “Moonlit Night” by Ivan Aivazovsky. The painting from 1878 was purchased at auction for 92 million rubles,” said Auction Holding. “RIA News”.

Auction Holding previously reported that the painting would be put up for auction for 100 million rubles.

Other art objects were also sold at the auction: the painting “Patriarch Philaret” by Ilya Repin (29.5 million rubles), “The Himalayas” by Nicholas Roerich (12 million rubles), “The Church of Athanasius of Alexandria in Belaya Sluda” by Vasily Vereshchagin (9, 5 million rubles) and an author’s copy of the statue “Pointing Centaur” by Ernst Neizvestny (6.5 million rubles). The total amount of sales amounted to 235.5 million rubles.

Former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Gunduz Mamedov previously suggested that they want to sell at auction a painting by Ivan Aivazovsky, which is on the international wanted list. However, Auction Holding denied this. It is alleged that we are talking about the artist’s painting of the same name, which was painted four years apart. The work sold during the auction was purchased in Sweden in 2008 at the Stockholms Auktionsverk auction, the work was examined at the State Russian Museum. Another “Moonlight Night” is officially in the collections of the Simferopol State Museum.
