Large Russian airport holdings “Airports of Regions”, “Aerodynamics” and “Novaport”, as well as Moscow Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports, refused to participate in the reconstruction of Sukhum airport. They write about it “Vedomosti” with reference to representatives of the holdings and sources close to them.
The publication’s interlocutors at airport holdings explained the refusal to restore the operation of the airport in the capital of Abkhazia by the fact that there is still no understanding of possible passenger traffic. It is also unclear which airlines will agree to operate flights to the unrecognized republic, Vedomosti sources note. Besides Russia, only four states recognize the independence of Abkhazia: Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Syria. Another interlocutor drew attention to the difficulties with the delivery of building materials for this project, since they are not produced in Abkhazia.
The only airport in Abkhazia with international status has not been operating for almost 30 years, since the war with Georgia in 1992-93. It has one of the longest runways in the former Soviet Union.
The authorities of Abkhazia have been working on attracting a specialized investor for the Sukhumi airport for several years. In April, Vedomosti sources said that a competition to select an investor was planned to be held “in the coming months.”
According to the terms of the airport reconstruction competition, a partnership agreement for a period of 49 years will be concluded with the winner. The investor will have to invest at least 8 billion rubles in reconstruction. It is expected that the airport will begin servicing regular flights no later than March 31, 2025.
