Airbus intends to abandon Russian titanium in a few months

The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus expects to “get rid of dependence” on the supply of titanium from Russia within a few months, reported Reuters agency.
“We are in the process of separating from Russia when it comes to titanium. It will be a matter of months, not years, ”the agency quoted Airbus Defense & Space CEO Michael Schollhorn as saying.
The company still purchases a certain amount of Russian titanium, he said, but Reuters notes that the company has increased purchases in the US and Japan. At the same time, certification of new suppliers due to strict aerospace standards can take years.
Russia is the largest producer of titanium, which is used primarily in aircraft engines and landing gear for large aircraft. Airbus said in April that potential sanctions on the supply of the metal would hurt the aerospace industry, but would not harm the Russian economy.
The American aircraft manufacturing corporation Boeing, in turn, announced the suspension of titanium purchases in Russia on March 7. The company then said that they had accumulated significant reserves of this metal.
