In January–August 2023, Russian airlines increased passenger transportation on international airlines by 33% year-on-year to 14.6 million people, according to data from the Federal Air Transport Agency, which Vedomosti reviewed. This is the maximum figure for this period since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Passenger traffic to non-CIS countries grew at a faster pace – by 46% year-on-year, transportation in the CIS countries increased by 23%.

In January–August 2019, Russian airlines carried 37 million passengers on international flights, but in 2020 this figure collapsed to 9.6 million people. In 2021, this passenger flow partially recovered to 12.1 million people, and in 2022, after the start of the SVO in Ukraine, the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions and the cessation of flights of Russian airlines to unfriendly countries, it again dropped to 11 million passengers.
