Agatha Christie’s family supports black protagonist in BBC adaptation

Agatha Christie’s great-grandson James Pritchard suggested that the writer would most likely approve of changing the origin and race of the main character of her novel “Easy to Kill” – from British to Nigerian. This is what the creators of the new television adaptation of the detective story for the BBC did.
In response to a question from Radio Times, Mr Pritchard stated: “First of all, I never try to overestimate my great-grandmother in hindsight – that would be strange. What I’m basing this on is that she didn’t like the first few film adaptations of her plays because she didn’t think they were radical enough to change society. She understood that when the environment changes, history must change. “It gives us a certain freedom to change things, and I also believe that these are adaptations, not translations, and you’re always looking at the story from where you are now, 90 years after it was written.”
Considering the changing views of society during this time, a change in the nationality of the main character is quite acceptable, says James Pritchard. “The main thing always remains history, as well as something purely Christian in it. I think you know what I mean and whether it’s there or not. “It’s definitely present in “Easy to Kill”,” summed up the great-grandson of the writer.
