The fate of the icon will be decided by the specialists of the Grabar Restoration Center, not the Tretyakov Gallery
The Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Olga Lyubimova said that after the “tour” in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, “Trinity” will go for restoration to the Grabar Center. At the same time, she did not specify how long the icon would stay in the XXC, but from her cautious speech it became clear that the specialists of the Tretyakov Gallery are no longer very trusted to draw conclusions about the state of the masterpiece of ancient Russian art. And most importantly, her statement suggests that the story around the most famous iconic image continues to heat up and divide society.
On the eve of the service on the occasion of the Trinity holiday in the XXC, where the icon was brought from the Tretyakov Gallery by special transport, Patriarch Kirill said that the image would soon be in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where it would remain forever. Two weeks in the HHS, then prophylaxis-restoration and you can take away for permanent residence in the Trinity Cathedral. However, Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova has a different opinion.
Despite the soothing tone of her speech, where she emphasizes that the temperature and humidity regime in the icon case with the icon is observed, that believers will be allowed to access the image in a dosed manner, and in general all possible precautions are taken, one can guess that things are not so smooth. After all, after “balm for the soul” about the excellent conditions in the temple, Lyubimova immediately declares that after the tour the icon will be examined by independent experts of the Grabar Center, and the decision on its further fate will be made by the scientific council. And despite the fact that only competent specialists can decide what and how, the icon will probably remain under restoration for about a year. That is, it is already obvious that a long-term “treatment” of the masterpiece will certainly be needed.
At the same time, the subtext of the words spoken by the minister indicates that they will try to move the Tretyakov Gallery away from participation in the fate of the shrine. Probably, the situation with the inappropriate window display, in which the “Troitsa” went to the Lavra a year ago and now poisoned itself in the XXC, will still be investigated. It must be understood that the Criminal Code has a special article on this subject – number 243 – “Destruction or damage to cultural heritage.”
Another important statement was made by the minister: the icon will remain in the state collection, that is, in the museum fund, which means that the museum community will decide its fate and the responsibility will remain with the cultural department. According to Lyubimova, the Russian Orthodox Church agrees with this. But experience suggests that we should wait for the next statement of the Patriarch. Obviously, the precedent with the “Trinity” is connected not only with the return of this particular shrine to the bosom of the church. If the icon passes to the ROC completely and irrevocably, and church restorers, and not museum restorers, will monitor its condition, this may be followed by a redistribution of the rest of the museum fund, where there are now many exhibits of not only cultural, but also religious significance.
So we are waiting for the next move in this chess game, the outcome of which can decide the fate of many cultural values and change the existing rules and laws on the museum fund.
