After restoration, Ostrovsky’s house-museum will become a portal to the past

The house-museum of A.N. Ostrovsky will be restored in Moscow. The building built in 1822, which today is a branch of the Bakhrushin Museum, will be restored to its proper form by the 200th anniversary of the playwright’s birth.
As MK found out, the priority of the specialists involved in the restoration of the two-story wooden mansion on Malaya Ordynka is to preserve as much as possible everything related to the historical appearance of the building. Only those materials that have not passed the test of time will be replaced. The restorers will partially sort out the frame of the house, strengthen it and replace individual crowns in unsatisfactory condition. Foundations, walls, truss structures and roofing will be strengthened, and windows and doors will be restored according to preserved samples.
After the restoration, in the mansion where Alexander Ostrovsky was born in 1823 and spent the first years of his life, it is planned to open a modern exhibition space. It is already known that the new exposition in the playwright’s house-museum will become a portal to Ostrovsky’s era for visitors. For example, guests will be able to see the characters of his plays through media installations and immersive effects.
In addition to the mansion itself, the museum complex includes two residential buildings built in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century, as well as an almshouse from the late 19th century. According to plans, the almshouse will recreate the atmosphere of a merchant’s patty-tea shop.

In the Soviet period, communal apartments were first located in the house, and then it was transferred to the A.A. Bakhrushin. In 1984, the Museum of A.N. Ostrovsky. The collection of the museum has about 50 thousand items. These are diaries, notebooks and autographs of the playwright himself, as well as letters from Ivan Turgenev, Nikolai Nekrasov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and others.
