AFP sued X Corp. for the unwillingness of the platform to pay for news content

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, which sued X Corp. Elon Musk for the fact that the company refuses to enter into negotiations on the terms of payments to the agency for the use of news content. We are talking about the law on related rights for the press, which was adopted in France back in 2019. According to this law, digital platforms must negotiate with the media about the amount of compensation for the use of news content.

However, Elon Musk himself does not consider the law fair: “This is strange. They want us to pay “them” for traffic to their site that generates ad revenue for them, but we don’t?!” he wrote in X.

This is not AFP’s first legal battle with digital platforms. Back in 2020, French regulators ordered Google to start negotiations with publishers after a complaint from AFP. At the beginning of 2021, an American corporation agreed with the media on the amount of payments – $ 76 million over three years for 121 publishers. But later the authorities found these conditions unacceptable – in the end, in July 2021, the French antitrust regulator fined Google for €500 million for improper compliance with the requirements of the law on related rights.
