The theater of satire enters the second century. On the eve of the opening of the 100th anniversary season, a troupe gathering was held there. It is immediately clear that the team is fearless and sharp-tongued. The spirit of freedom in him is not killed. And this is a plus for his artistic director Sergei Gazarov, who could feel like he was in a circus arena with unpredictable predators. One careless move or word and you will get a rebuff.
The facade of the theater is in scaffolding. By the end of the year, all the news and work of the workshops will be reflected on it. Passers-by will see on the media screen how wigs and wooden products are made in theater workshops. At the same time, the historical flavor will be preserved.
The president of the Satire Theater, Alexander Shirvindt, arrived earlier than others. He settled down in the foyer, and everyone tried to hug him. The words of one of the vigilant employees immediately sounded: “You can’t kiss.” When Shirvindt entered the auditorium, his colleagues greeted him with applause. Then the patriarch remained silent, sitting in the front row.
For more than an hour, Sergei Gazarov did not leave the stage: he gave a 45-minute speech, then answered questions for half an hour. The day before we played the play “Ivan Vasilyevich” staged by him – for now for our own people and the press. On the stage there was scenery with a huge ball, which reflected the stalls and the entire creative team, the back of one person sitting in front of him, from whom much is expected. And he sets a high bar and demands.
There was a lot of talk about replacing the windows, which would now reflect sunlight, and about the outdated foyer, where it was time to change the photos. Photographs are some kind of key and painful topic. While in the foyer there are portraits of only half of the troupe with the comic “Zinulya, Lyubasha, Olezhek”… They make a strange, if not depressing, impression. Interestingly, the artists refused to appear wearing helmets against the backdrop of the renovated façade. Sergei Gazarov says that many employees have not seen the performances, but are discussing his condition in the media. He cited Zhvanetsky’s words that one should argue about the taste of oysters with those who have tried them.
While the artistic director was calling his team into the bright distance, calling for the creation of a high-tech modern theater, people were talking about the essentials: salaries, bonuses, financial security, asking whether experience would be taken into account. “It will be,” answered Gazarov. “And we will also take into account how many steps from the bus stop to the theater.” The actress and mother of two children asked whether there would be Christmas trees. Gazarov replied: “I can play a wolf or a bear.” And then he continued: “We will move towards complicating the scores.” According to him, the theater is in a difficult situation, there is a problem with the workshops, not all of them meet modern demands. For example, there is a metal shop on Bronnaya, but the artistic director does not see the fruits of its activity on stage. A dialogue ensues in the hall: “Are they making fences?” – “In the cemetery, or what?..” The theater of satire as it is. The artists complained about the cramped dressing rooms, uncomfortable chairs…
The troupe has doubled in size and now has 121 artists, so when Sergei Gazarov introduced the young additions, a demonstrative “Ha-ha-ha!” was heard in the hall. A dialogue ensued: “Is this crying or joy?” – “Joy, of course. There aren’t enough of us.” It’s great that there is no dictatorship reigning at the Satire Theater, and people can cast their voices like “Zinulya Matrosova” – that’s what’s written under her photo in the foyer. She is simply beautiful and fighting. She invited those who complained about the cramped dressing rooms to come into hers.
Meanwhile, Gazarov sets a course for young and children’s audiences, and encourages them to look at the classics with modern eyes. He tried to turn his “Ivan Vasilyevich” towards the unusual, but not with the goal of surprising. “We have become big and powerful. We have four stages, 1,800 seats in total,” he says. The children’s stage on Sportivnaya will operate in an adult format, and there will also be evening performances. The goal is “not to cloud children’s minds.” Even honored and popular people will take part in children’s performances. Gazarov himself is ready to play them. Once, even before joining as artistic director, he saw how Alexander Shirvindt came on stage before the performance on Sunday to greet the children, so that the parents opened their mouths in surprise. And I thought: “Why did he come on Sunday in such good weather, why isn’t he sitting in the country?” This was so amazing and made me think once again that the way we raise our children will be our future.
In the near future, Victor Kramer will stage the play “Pygmalion” by Bernard Shaw. He has already presented the scenography, and Sergei Gazarov is delighted with the modern interpretation. “Our stage is 17 meters high, one of the largest in Moscow. We have no right to narrow it. We must have scope in the choice of both repertoire and stage decisions. It must be power! — under this slogan the season will pass.
