Filmed concerts do not usually provide material for great television moments. All the more reason not to miss this documentary filmed in March 2012 by the Swedish Jonas Akerlund in the bowels of Paris Bercy, on the occasion of the concert of the Berliners of Rammstein. The director, who has worked with Madonna, U2, Pink, Metallica and Lady Gaga in particular, has carved out a good reputation for himself by multiplying technical finds and transforming a simple music video into a total spectacle.
The Swede’s encounter with Rammstein, a German metal band with 20 million albums sold and which offers incredible concerts, was intriguing. And, in fact, even installed in his sofa, we come out of this televised show almost as exhausted as if we had been in the pit, in the middle of the crowd in a trance.
How can a filmed concert provide such emotions? Rammstein’s music obviously has a lot to do with it, both powerful and melodic, full of hits like Keine Lust, Engel, Du Hast Du Riechst so Gut, to recite nobody else but them. The energy, quality and rhythmic rigor of the five musicians (Christian Lorenz, Paul Landers, Richard Zven Kruspe, Christoph Schneider, Oliver Riedel), too. And, of course, the charisma of Till Lindemann, a singer with a figure much less slender than that of Mick Jagger, but with an unusual stage presence and hoarse voice.

When one of the 25 cameras set up for the occasion by Akerlund lingers in close-up on Lindemann’s face, the clear gaze of the latter seems to hypnotize not only the entire public at Bercy, but also the viewers. The Berlin group, accustomed to spectacular concerts saturated with special effects, offers in Paris an abundance of pyrotechnics and an impeccable scenography, benefiting from an impressive technical device for this tour: a stage 24 meters long and 15 meters high, walkways, stairs, around a hundred amplifiers, a 380,000 watt sound system and a staff of 125 technicians ensuring the smooth running of operations.
To this is added the expert eye of the Swedish director, who transforms each song into a moment of intense emotion. Alternating black and white images and color images, filming certain movements from several angles, adopting nervous editing, Jonas Akerlund takes over the concert to make it an exceptional show.
Torso clad in microphones that look like grenades, Till Lindemann confirms his status as a stage beast. We may not appreciate certain scenographies flirting with the grotesque (sexual acts, giant serpent’s tongue springing from Lindemann’s mouth), but the lightning, the flames, the play of lights blend perfectly with the heady rhythms and the rigor of this band.
Ten years after this successful capture, is the group still performing as well? In June 2019, the memorable show given by Lindemann and his comrades at La Défense Arena, near Paris, provided a clear answer: a Rammstein concert is always an out-of-the-ordinary event. In vivo or on TV.
