Kommersant FM columnist Dmitry Butkevich talks about which items from the collection of the famous musician and composer will appear at Christie’s auctions.
Sir Elton John is selling about 900 objects and works of art from his former penthouse in Atlanta. The Christie’s auction series begins on February 21, with sales totaling an estimated $10 million.
Last fall, Sir John, along with his partner and manager David Furnish, sold his residence in Atlanta for $7 million. He purchased this property back in the 1990s. Now, according to Western press reports, the couple is consolidating their collection of works of art and memorabilia with a view to selling it.
Among the highlights of the upcoming sale is the Yamaha conservatory grand piano on which Elton John wrote the popular Broadway shows “Billy Elliot” and “Aida.” The musical instrument is offered at the start for $50 thousand. And also a portrait of the singer himself by Julian Schnabel for $300 thousand. Finally, the famous Banksy triptych of 2017, in which a man in a mask throws a bouquet of flowers, estimated at $1.5 million.
The sale will not be complete without the singer’s iconic sunglasses, the singer’s signature signature, silver platform boots with his initials, and an ivory and gold suit created by textile designer Annie Reavey in the 1970s.
During his time in Georgia, Sir John amassed an extensive collection, including works by Dorothea Lange, Hungarian photographer Andre Kertész, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe. His interest in photography was encouraged by local gallerist Jane Jackson, who eventually became director of the Sir Elton John Collection in 2003. Part of it was shown as part of the exhibition “The Radical Eye”, which took place at the Tate Modern gallery in London in 2016.
Works from Elton John’s collection were also included in the 2000 exhibition “Chorus of Light” at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and many of them are now on sale, including works by Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Andres Serrano.
Most of the singer’s collection is being put up for public sale for the first time since 2003.
