The leader of the ranking of the most popular topics in the English-language Wikipedia, published annually by the Wikimedia Foundation, was an article about ChatGPT. Also popular topics include sports competitions in India, the films Oppenheimer and Barbie, billionaire Elon Musk and the military conflict in Ukraine.

The first place in terms of number of views was taken by an article about the popular neural network ChatGPT (49.5 million views).

In second and third place is an article about famous people who died in 2023 (this is rather a list of the names of such people with links to articles about them on Wikipedia), and about the 2023 Cricket World Cup held in India. They have 42.7 million and 38.2 million views, respectively. As the Wikimedia Foundation noted, the ranking of the most popular articles “tells the story of how you and society at large seek information about our ever-changing world in the world’s largest encyclopedia.”

The top 10 also included articles about the film “Oppenheimer” released this year and about the physicist Robert Oppenheimer himself, to whom the film is dedicated.

There are two more film articles in the top ten, both of which are about Indian films released in 2023: Soldier and Pathan: Deathmatch. Three more articles in the top 10 are devoted to sporting events: the Indian Premier Cricket League, the Cricket World Cup (this article is about this competition as a whole, and not about this year’s championship) and the Indian Premier Cricket League 2023.

Among the topics included in the top 25 by request, most are related to cinema and TV series (8 articles). In addition to the films listed above, these are the films “Barbie”, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Part 3”, as well as the series “The Last of Us”. There are quite a lot of articles related to sports—there are seven of them in the rating. Apart from several articles on popular cricket competitions in India, this includes articles on footballers Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

In addition, the top 25 includes articles about singer Taylor Swift, billionaire Elon Musk and the notorious American-British blogger Andrew Tate.

Two more articles are dedicated to celebrities who died this year: actor Matthew Perry, known for his role in the TV series “Friends,” and Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley. Also in the top 25 were articles about India and the military conflict in Ukraine.

The rating is based on data from the beginning of the year to November 28. In total, during this period, various articles on the English-language Wikipedia were viewed more than 84 billion times. Although the top 25 included many articles related to India, the United States remains the leader in the number of views of articles in English (33.2 billion). Next by a wide margin are the UK (9 billion), India (8.5 billion) and Canada (4 billion).

The Wikimedia Foundation has been publishing rankings of the most popular articles since 2015. In 2022, the leaders in the rating were articles about the American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and about the military conflict in Ukraine. In previous years, the first place was taken by articles about the deaths of famous people during the year (2021), the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) and the film “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
