A foreign anti-tick drug has disappeared from veterinary pharmacies – Kommersant

The drug “Bravecto” has disappeared from Russian veterinary pharmacies; it is used to treat diseases transmitted by ticks and fleas. Rosselkhoznadzor assures that Russian drugs can be used instead. Experts say they may have more side effects.

They complained about the loss of Bravecto “Izvestia” dog breeders, shelter owners and doctors. According to them, there are no full-fledged analogues, and on marketplaces the remaining medicines are sold at a much higher price; in addition, there is a risk of buying a counterfeit.

“Now the drug is difficult to find in veterinary pharmacies and on various online platforms. And if there is a medicine, it costs at least twice as much as last year. Previously, it could be bought for 2 thousand rubles, now it is sold for 4–7 thousand rubles,” said one of the newspaper’s interlocutors. As Anna Makarova, head of the therapy department at the veterinary hospital Vetcity Clinic, said, Bravecto has fewer side effects.

Rosselkhoznadzor said that the drug has not been officially imported into Russia since 2022, but MSD, which produces it, has already submitted an application for an opinion on its compliance with “the requirements of good manufacturing practice rules.” “In general, there is a sufficient number of domestically produced drugs on the Russian market for the treatment and prevention of parasitic infections in domestic animals,” the department is confident.

As Kommersant reported, the American pharmaceutical company MSD has reduced its portfolio of drugs sold in the Russian Federation by a quarter over the two years that the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict has been going on, although the pharmaceutical industry has not fallen under Western sanctions. This led to a drop in revenue, which decreased by 37% at the end of 2023, to RUB 8.7 billion. MSD had the most noticeable reduction among the representative offices of international pharmaceutical manufacturers represented in the Russian Federation.
