“According to preliminary data, the fire occurred at approximately 03:30. All possible versions of the fire are being considered, including arson,” the Abkhaz Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement. Gallery director Suram Sakania, citing eyewitnesses, said that the fire started from the roof.
“A real tragedy in Sukhumi. Together with our colleagues from Abkhazia, we are thinking about how to help,” Olga Lyubimova wrote in Telegram channel.
On the night of January 21, the Central Exhibition Hall of the Union of Artists of Abkhazia caught fire. The National Gallery’s collection of 4 thousand paintings by Abkhaz and foreign artists completely burned down. Among them were the works of the first professional artist of Abkhazia, Alexander Chachba-Shervashidze. According to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic, about 150 works were saved.
