On December 20, in the capital, a book was presented by Marina Raikina, editor of the literature and art department of MK, dedicated to the place of laughter, jokes and comical improvisation in the history of the Theater. Vakhtangov. The phrase that we see on the cover – “End your Vakhtangov humor” – is a well-known saying of the legendary Ruben Ivanovich Simonov, the theater’s chief director from 1939 to 1968.

“He used to start rehearsals with those words. But intonation it sounded completely different: continue, continue your Vakhtangov humor, ”said our colleague, opening the meeting with readers.

– The humor of the Vakhtangov Theater stands out among others. From my point of view, this is a system of coordinates, collectively formulated a long time ago, according to which the theater lives today, held together for 17 years, when it was left without an artistic director and survived in other unbearable times.

The second part of the title of the book just articulates this system: “To laugh. In order not to cry ”(that was the name of Vakhtangov’s cabaret program earlier), fueled by joy, regardless of the circumstances.

“I look at the humor of the Vakhtangovites through history, including Yevgeny Vakhtangov himself, who was like a fire that fell from the sky, extinguished very quickly, but passed on his passion to his first students in 1914. Actress Yulia Borisova was taught by her teachers like this: the Vakhtangov Theater is artistry, aristocracy, grace, nobility and light. Time corrected these principles, but there was always a holiday, joy, and humor, which is a stone’s throw from grief and death, ”says the author.

The basis for the publication, prepared by Marina Raikina, was conversations with many members of the troupe.

“Out of 113 people, one refused me,” jokes the journalist, who painstakingly recorded saving funny stories from the lips of the current generation of Vakhtangovites and found grains of comical in the archives and memoirs of those who are called the kings and queens of Vakhtangov humor. Epigrams, caricatures, make-up from the end of the century before last to the present day – that’s what came to the attention of the theater historian.

Also Raikina for the first time collected and studied three versions of the production of “Princess Turandot” – 1922, 1963 and 1991.

But a book in the 21st century is not just a case with meanings sealed in it; Thanks to the QR-code system, the publication overcomes material boundaries; in the virtual application, Raikina and her assistants provide unique video and photo materials, rare recordings of rehearsals and skits.

It should be noted that wonderful actors Elena Sotnikova (who read her poems), Vladimir Simonov, Mikhail Vaskov, deputy director of the Vakhtangov Theater, theater teacher Anna Brusser, singer Nina Shatskaya (who performed spectacularly, despite the microphones and sound equipment falling into a stupor) came to support Raikin. And Maria Aronova and Nonna Grishaeva turned to the audience from the screen and performed the same thing that they were singing on stage at that moment in the play “Mademoiselle Nitush”.

One of the stories told on stage by Mikhail Vaskov, in conclusion, we will give in full:

– 1981 was significant in that the Vakhtangov Theater turned 60 years old. And the day before the anniversary, gasoline went up in price (From 20 to 40 kopecks per liter. – I.V.). Great celebrations were organized in the theatre. On November 13, everyone came to congratulate – Dmitry Zhuravlev, Rostislav Plyatt, the Nikitin duet, Mark Prudkin and others. Yuri Nikulin comes out and starts reading from a piece of paper, and all the time it sounds “Forty is a huge term”, “Forty is a big responsibility”. There was an uproar among the performers. Nina Nekhlopochenko was the first to say very loudly: “I’ve lost my mind.” Nikulin continues. Yulia Konstantinovna Borisova in a whisper: “Yura, the theater is sixty.” Nikulin does not hear. Lanovoy with Yakovlev chorus whisper “Sixty!”. Ulyanov is not shy: “Yurka! We are sixty.” Nikulin stops, blushes and says: “Fuck! Well, I messed with gasoline!
