Passenger traffic at Sochi airport on international flights may increase sevenfold

By the end of 2022, the number of passengers on international flights at Sochi Airport may exceed 1 million people compared to 150.7 thousand in 2021. That is, the figure will increase seven times. This was announced by Alexander Nikonov, director of the Aerodinamika Group of Companies, which manages the airport. The reason for the increase in passenger traffic was the closure of airports in southern Russia.

“The growth of international passenger traffic was affected by the closure of airports in the south of Russia and the operation of the Sochi airfield as a temporary hub … By the end of 2022, Sochi Airport plans to serve 1.1 million passengers on international flights,” said Mr. Nikonov, his words transmits press service of the Aerodinamika Group of Companies.

According to the director of the company, in January-August 2021, 122 thousand people have already used international flights, and in 2022 – 608 thousand.

The increase in the number of international flights was influenced by the active work of the airport with Russian airlines, within the framework of which foreign route networks were created, processes of through processing of transfer baggage were integrated and new foreign air carriers were attracted, the press service noted.

Four new airlines launched flights to Sochi in 2022 — Air Serbia, Fly one Armenia, Fly Jordan and Fly Arna. Sochi Airport currently offers 20 foreign destinations in eight countries: Turkey, Egypt, Israel, UAE, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan.

Since the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine, a temporary flight restriction regime has been in place at 11 airports in the southern and central parts of Russia. These are airports in Rostov-on-Don, Anapa, Gelendzhik, Krasnodar, Elista, Simferopol, Bryansk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Kursk and Lipetsk.
