ZNPP is located near the city of Energodar, Zaporozhye region, on the banks of the Kakhovka reservoir. The nuclear power plant consists of six power units based on Soviet-designed VVER-1000 reactors with an installed power capacity of 1 GW each. The first four power units started operating in 1984-1987, the fifth and sixth units – in 1989 and 1995. ZNPP generated 35.5 billion kWh in 2021, which was about 23% of the total output of the Ukrainian energy system.
Since March 2022, the ZNPP has been under fire, the reactors were gradually shut down, and by September 11, all six power units stopped generating electricity for safety reasons. In October 2022, the President of the Russian Federation signed a decree according to which the Russian state became the owner of ZNPP. The operator of the plant is a subsidiary of the Rosenergoatom concern JSC Operating Organization of Zaporozhye NPP.
