According to Bloomberg citing Adobe data, Americans spent $6.4 billion on purchases on the first day of Amazon Prime Day. This is 6% more than last year, but much worse than the forecasts of the same Adobe. Analysts at the company assumed that spending during the sale would be 9.5% more than last year.
At the same time, research firm Numerator calculated that the average check size on the first day of the sale was $56.64, up 7% from last year. And the top-selling categories were household goods and essential goods.
Amazon Prime Day has been held annually since 2015 and lasts two days. Only subscribers to the Prime service are eligible to participate, which costs customers $139 per year, but in return provides discounts on shipping, streaming service and other bonuses. In the US alone, 167 million people are customers of the service.
Globally, participants in the sale will spend $12.9 billion this year, up 11% from 2022, Insider Intelligence predicts.
