After two years of the pandemic, user spending on apps and mobile games has declined in 2022. According to analysts from Data.ai, which provided such data, the mobile application market has returned to normal.

In-app user spending fell 2% to $167 billion in 2022, according to the analytics firm’s annual State of Mobile report released today. Data.ai (formerly called App Annie). The spending of users in mobile games decreased even more significantly – by 5%, to $109.5 billion.

Analysts of the company explain this, in particular, by the fact that after two years, when the pandemic had a serious impact on the market, the situation returned to normal. In 2020, after the massive introduction of covid restrictions, was fixed a very significant increase in downloads (by 10%) and in-app spending (by 25%).

Now the market is returning to normal development. The authors of the report note that “unsatisfied (during the pandemic.— “b”) the demand for travel and entertainment in real life captures an increasing share of wallets.

In addition, the general macroeconomic situation and high inflation are affecting.

At the same time, some other indicators continued to grow. The number of new app downloads increased by 11% to 255 billion. The average time spent by users in apps increased by 3%. It was about five hours a day. The total time spent in applications by all users also increased by 9%, to 4.1 trillion hours per day. Apps are highly attractive to advertisers, with their mobile ad spending up 14% in 2022 to $336 billion.

China remains the leader in the number of app downloads, as it was a year earlier, followed by India and the United States. Russia is in sixth place in this indicator. China also leads the way in app spending. The second and third places are occupied by the USA and Japan.

Russia is not in the top 20 in terms of spending (this may be due to the disabling of the ability to pay from Russia in Google Play and the limitation of such an opportunity in the App Store).

The most popular (in terms of the number of downloads) application in the world is Instagram (owned by the Meta corporation, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). Followed by TikTok and Facebook. The top 10 downloads also include WhatsApp, Snapchat, Telegram and Facebook Messenger, CapCut video editor, Spotify music streaming service, and WhatsApp Business messenger.

TikTok, YouTube and dating service Tinder are leading in user spending. In addition to them, the top 10 includes video streaming services Disney+, HBO Max, Tencent Video and iQIYI, as well as Google One cloud storage, Japanese manga subscription service Piccoma and dating service Bumble.

The most downloaded games were Subway Surfers, Free Fire and Ludo King. Users spent the most in Honor of Kings, Genshin Impact and Candy Crush Saga.
