VPN Proton pulls servers out of India due to new privacy law

The Swiss company Proton AG, which owns the popular VPN service of the same name, informed about withdrawing its servers from India “to protect the privacy of … users.” This decision was made on the eve of the entry into force on September 25 of the new Indian Cybersecurity Law.
By law, Indian VPN service providers and data center owners must store and, if necessary, provide the authorities with the following user data: the user’s name, physical and email address, phone number, IP address used when registering for the VPN service, and IP address. addresses obtained when using such a service, data on the time of Internet sessions using VPN. If the new law is not followed, the perpetrators can receive up to one year in prison.
Back in April, when the law was passed, Proton AG subjected criticized it as an “attack on user privacy”. The Swiss company has now notified Indian users that they will be able to continue using the service with their Indian IP address. Proton AG added that from now on, the functions of the Indian servers will be performed by the company’s servers located in Singapore.
