The decision of the Sri Lankan authorities to issue free visas to citizens of seven countries, including Russia, has come into force. Relevant resolution was published on the official news portal of the country’s government. The issuance of visas takes place as part of a pilot project that will be valid until March 31, 2024.
According to a document from the department of electronic registration of tourists, the new regime is introduced for citizens of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan and comes into force immediately. It is clarified that the issuance of visas “is being launched as a pilot program to restore the tourism industry in accordance with the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers.”
Citizens of seven countries must apply for an e-Visa before arriving in Sri Lanka. Tourists are allowed to stay in the country for up to 30 days. However, double entry is allowed from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka for a period of 30 days. If this period expires after March 31, 2024, the applicant will be denied a free visa extension.
The bill, according to which visa fees would be abolished for citizens of Russia, China, India, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia, was submitted for discussion to the Sri Lankan government on October 15. The country’s Tourism Minister Harin Fernando reported that the initiative was developed jointly with the Ministry of Public Security for countries whose citizens actively visit the island as tourists.
